One of the most liberating thoughts I've ever had in my life was this: no one owes you anything. Not your parents, not the world, not the universe, not life in general. You were born, and from then on, everything you have is the result of what you are capable of building, not of a debt that someone owes you.
The illusion of merit
We grow up hearing that we deserve things. We deserve to be happy, we deserve success, we deserve recognition. And it's not a lie, in the sense that no one should live unhappy on purpose. The problem is when this "deserving" turns into an expectation that the world will deliver these things just because we exist.
The world does not work by merit. It works by cause and effect. Nobody owes you a good job just because you studied. No one owes you a healthy relationship just because you're a good person. No one owes you recognition just because you tried hard. These things can come, but they come as a consequence of action, not as payment of a debt that the universe owes you.
Because this liberates instead of depressing
At first glance, it seems like a sad thought. But it's the opposite. If no one owes you anything, you also stop going through life waiting for someone to pay off that imaginary debt. You stop feeling angry at the world for not giving you what you “deserved”. You stop waiting for others to validate your efforts, take care of your happiness, or solve your problems for you.
This returns control to where it always should have been: in your hands.
Where does this appear in practice
At work, when we expect to be promoted just because we've been with the company for a long time, instead of showing concrete value.
In relationships, when we expect the other person to guess our needs, instead of communicating them clearly.
In financial life, when we wait for an opportunity to “fall from the sky”, instead of building it with our own effort.
In friendships, when we feel hurt for not being "reciprocated" in the same way, forgetting that no one signed any automatic reciprocity contract.
The choice of where to invest your energy
One of the central points of this way of thinking is simple: we have limited energy, and that energy is our most valuable asset. Every time we spend it demanding that the world owe us something, we take that energy away from where it really matters, which is building, acting, creating value.
Accepting that no one owes you anything is not giving up on expecting good things in life. It's about stopping waiting for them to come for free, and starting to get them with your own hands.
What changes when we accept this
When you stop waiting for the world to pay you a non-existent debt, frustration decreases. You stop being hurt by people who never promised anything, by situations that never guaranteed anything, by a life that never signed a contract with you.
And, paradoxically, that's when you start to build more. Because you are no longer waiting to receive. You are focused on creating.
No one owes you anything. And that's exactly why everything you build will, in fact, be yours.
